On April 11, 2025, the Trump administration began to require that certain immigrants register online with the government after being in the country for more than 30 days. These immigrants mostly include undocumented persons who entered without admission and inspection and Canadians who entered at the land border and do not have an I-94 card.
Certain people are considered registered already and do NOT need to register online:
- Lawful permanent residents
- Individuals in deportation proceedings, meaning those who have been issued a Notice to Appear
- Individuals who have applied for adjustment of status, even if that application was denied
- Individuals who have had an employment authorization document, even if expired (I-766)
- Individuals who have had a border crossing card or I-94 card, even if expired (this mainly applies to individuals who have entered the country with parole or a visa)
- Individuals who have a landing permit as a crewman
Immigrants who are required to register must do so online. They will receive an appointment notice to get fingerprinted and a registration card afterwards. Failure to comply or carry proof of registration could result in criminal prosecution or civil penalties, namely fines of $5,000 and 180 days in jail.
Important: Any individual required to register online should consult with a criminal defense attorney and immigration attorney.
Our attorneys are currently reviewing open client cases at the Logan Firm to determine which clients must register online. Clients can expect to receive email communication regarding this matter soon.
Prior clients with closed cases and individuals who have had a consultation with the Logan Firm without signing a contract to retain the firm will not be contacted.
